You can handle the heat, but can you handle the cold?

While the benefits of ice bathing and cold plunge can be powerful for your everyday life, its important to understand how to enjoy cold plunge in a healthy way.

You may have heard of the booming benefits of the Cold Plunge. but its not a new concept. Most Roman bathhouses had cold plunge areas, and for years athletes have been seen plunging straight into the icy water after a sports injury or a hard game. So why now has the cold plunge become so popular?

Ice baths have multiple benefits, such as improving cardiovascular circulation, lowering blood pressure and improving mood due to the release of endorphins upon cold water immersion. However, it wasn't until the rise of the internet and social media that the benefits of cold plunge surpassed elite athletes and made its way to the general public.

Nowadays, many celebrity sportspeople and influencers share their experience of how ice baths have shaped their fitness, their integrity and their daily routines. This does come at a risk.

While the benefits of ice bathing and cold plunge can be powerful for your everyday life, its important to understand how to enjoy cold plunge in a healthy way. Too long in the cold water and your body can reach hypothermia or go into cold shock and even cause long term damage to nerve endings.

Make sure to start slowly and build your tolerance over time. If world class athletes can stay in the water for 30 minutes, that doesn't mean someone new to ice baths should attempt anywhere near that length of time. Its important to follow your body and understand your limits to get the most long-term benefits from ice bathing.

And remember, although there is a world wide wellness trend promoting physical health and wellbeing, cold plunge is more than that. For years its been paired with sauna to promote mental clarity, a sense of calm and enjoyment.

In moderation, cold plunge can be an incredible tool to reconnect with your mind and body, but its a journey, not a sprint.
